This summer we went BIG and decided to take our residents on a world tour! This was part of our armchair travel experience, so they could enjoy different cultures and food from across the world. And what a trip we had!
Thank you to Michelle, our Lifestyle and Wellbeing lead, who started with us earlier this summer and put together such a summer of fun. She brings a multitude of experience and ideas from previous jobs and is supported by Vanda, who is part-time. You may have noticed the fabulous photos and videos Michelle puts together on Facebook. She is ensuring all the residents at Newstead continue to live their best lives.
The European leg of our world tour
After a quintessentially British day celebrating the Wimbledon final in our garden. A strawberry tea with Pimms, of course! We set off on our adventure. We had a French theme running through our home all week. Delicious French cuisine (thank you to our cheffing team!) and Boulles in the garden. https://www.facebook.com/100057054866714/videos/1041543767533012
Next stop Spain. Our dining room was decorated with red and yellow balloons and Spanish flag bunting. There were red roses on the tables and residents enjoyed a Spanish lunch washed down with virgin Sangria. Salud! ChinChin!
Then taking the world tour to America and India
We had some great fun during American theme week. The residents had a good time creating some colourful head-dresses and teepees.
Then to India which was a brilliant celebration thanks to our Newstead Indian family and their friends. Residents made crafts for our Indian festival week. Recycled old CDs make great votive candle holders. There was a lot of concentration and the results brought such pleasure to residents.
We had an amazing Indian party with traditional food cooked by our kitchen staff and Jinju one of our Nurses. Our afternoon was spent celebrating Indian culture provided by our Newstead Indian family and their friends. The colour, the saris, the dancing. It was wonderful. Thank you for an amazing afternoon enjoyed by everyone, residents, relatives and staff. https://www.facebook.com/100057054866714/videos/798560452394968
And back to Blighty!
After travels, there’s really no place like home! With the help of Creative Minds, Hereford, residents worked together to make a collage of our main house. They used tissue paper for the sky and different types of paints for the house, windows and pillars. The flowers were photos of flowers they made from coffee filters sprayed with ink. The finished result is amazing!
There was a scrumptious afternoon of CAKE! We tasted 9 delicious cakes describing the flavours and guessing the cakes. Some easier than others. Our residents reminisced about all the lovely cakes they used to bake, evoking lots of wonderful memories.
The Newstead Arms was open for business! We combined a pub afternoon with a 50’s quiz and sampled different cocktails and mocktails.
Then our own Night at The Proms. The visiting wind orchestra certainly cheered up an early autumn day, playing classical and traditional songs. So uplifting.
A summer of sport
We followed the Euros avidly and then built our own mini table football. Lots of laughs, fun and not one bit of cheating! Ha ha.. Everyone also loves balloon tennis and balloon football with the headers! Gentle fun exercise.
Then the Olympics! We held our Newstead Olympics with torch bearers, chuck a duck, synchronised swimming and archery. All great fun, everyone was a winner and loved receiving the medals!
Thank you to the Nuffield Health Physio team who are coming in for weekly fun physio sessions. They had us throwing bean bags onto cones, twisting our bodies, stretching to our toes and holding our leg out in a stretch, to name but a few!
