Spring is a time for new life and there has been much baby joy here at Newstead! Our duckling project brought immense pleasure for our residents. We also had a big send off for Caroline, who is shortly expecting her baby girl.
Our duckling project
On 14th March we took delivery of some duck eggs from Incredible Eggs. https://www.incredibleeggs.co.uk/
We took time setting up the incubator and learnt about the stages of egg development and candling. Everyone was peering into the incubator in anticipation, watching for any changes. It wasn’t long before we saw some cracks appear in one of the eggs. This little one was keen to get out into the world!
It wasn’t long before two wonderful bundles of joy hatched. It was thrilling to watch them fluff up and hear them cheep all day. Residents were able to cuddle and stroke them. Caroline became mother duck, as both ducklings had a lovely nap on her and then they were shown around to our residents who instantly loved them.
The next day, a third duckling hatched and the 4th in the night. Sadly another one of the eggs didn’t make it, but that is nature and we are so grateful for 4 hatching into the world. Full of beans already and when they snuggle up it’s like butter wouldn’t melt.
It was a momentous morning when our wonderful ducklings had their first swim! At first they weren’t sure but then they took to it ‘like a duck to water’. https://www.facebook.com/100057054866714/videos/pcb.475774107667747/1391032247994377
After a good splash about, then had a dry off and a long sleep. Its a hard life being this cute and fluffy. The ducklings were rehomed from 24th March by our staffing team.
And baby joy for Caroline
We said a fond farewell to Caroline and Mollie for a while, as Caroline starts her maternity leave. We will miss them whilst they are away, but are excited at the pending addition to their family. Residents helped to make a nappy cake for Caroline with lots of baby things adorning it. We also bought her a baby gym as a gift. Good luck Caroline! We can’t wait to meet your new baby girl.
