It’s a BIG summer of sport and more…. We have been gripped by the football, along with the whole nation. Even our TV has been decorated with England flags! Our residents who watched the 1966 match were hoping to see the England team win again at Wembley. It wasn’t to be but it was wonderful to watch and everyone felt very proud.

We have also been enjoying the tennis at Wimbledon. We had a strawberries and cream afternoon tea watching the men’s final.

And next there’s the Tokyo Olympics. I’m sure we shall be having our own mini-Olympics too with themed fitness sessions and garden games.

Sport and more ….

After the COVID lockdowns we are delighted to be welcoming entertainers back to our garden. Recently, during National Pets Week, residents shared special memories of their pets. They have missed animals in lockdown, so we have booked a visit by a petting zoo. There are so many therapeutic benefits of stroking animals. From lowering blood pressure to reducing the level of stress hormone cortisol. Residents will be able to cuddle all the smaller animals, such as rabbits and guineas pigs. Also groom the ponies and feed the goats and sheep.

We are also looking forward to a sing-along with Tickled Pink Productions. They are staging their summer spectacular ABBAlutley Fantastic in our garden. Tickled Pink are a favourite at Abberton and pre-pandemic have visited our home with their panto-style winter productions. It is great to have them back and ABBA hits too! We cannot wait!

This week, we have begun creating a time capsule memory box. This is based on our memories, thoughts and feelings of COVID and our time in lockdown. We will seal it on 19th July and open it in a year’s time. Residents really missed their families and friends but there are many happy memories showing how residents and our team supported eachother. For example, one of our residents Joyce taught our maintenance man Chris to ballroom dance. Resident Barry lead poetry sessions and introduced other residents to his life-long collection of poems. These Abberton family bonds are stronger than ever.

Our veggies, kindly donated by the FaNs Network, are growing well. Our green fingered residents are now planting them into big raised troughs. We have had homemade cakes and muffins from our chef with a cuppa and a team crossword under the gazebo.

Summer sport and more …… all make for lovely, relaxing, summer days.
