As you know, at The Lawns we like to move forwards as well as remember back; so this year we have set ourselves a fundraising goal. Throughout 2020, we will be raising funds to purchase a “Tiny Tablet” to further our person-centred care through technology.

Fundraising for the Tiny Tablet

Quite why it is called a “Tiny Tablet” is a mystery to us! It is in fact a fully interactive, large touch table, which is used the same way as a smart phone or iPad.

It provides CQC and Care Inspectorate Compliant software, with sensory and game Apps and internet access. The tablet is battery powered with no flexes – so no trip hazard risk – and residents would be able to sit around the tablet table for interactive group activities.

It is also fully portable and would link into the Wi-Fi throughout our home. It could easily be moved to each resident’s room and angled, for use one-to-one, for individual hobbies or to Skype friends and families.

How tech can help the elderly

Research strongly suggests that mental stimulation reduces the chances of Alzheimer’s and dementia developing. With a range of sensory, learning and game Apps there are many options with the Tiny Tablet to stimulate, challenge and spark those brain synapses.

We have seen first-hand how listening to music on an iPad can spark memories and bring so much joy. We believe that opening up the world of technology in an interactive tablet way, helps our residents feel in touch with the world and can reduce feelings of isolation. Showing our residents how to browse the web and the internet’s possibilities, is an excellent way of helping them retain engagement with things that interest them. Forging links across the world – for example, with our care home pen-pals in Minnesota, and closer to home to keep in touch with family and friends through Skype and email.

As you can imagine, with any technology the costs are huge, but we have raised over 50% so far and we have lots of fundraising events lined up for 2020.

We look forward to welcoming you. Please call 01905 821 388 or check our Facebook page for more information.
