Making holiday memories
The summer has flown by and one highlight for our residents was our Beach Day. Back for another year, after the success of the 2018 Beach Party and once again the sun shone for the occasion. A wonderful day for our residents to make some of their own summer holiday memories.
Families and friends of our residents joined us for the day. Little tots enjoyed building sand castles and were enthralled by the array of toppings and flavours at our pop-up Ice Cream Parlour. We also had a beach hut serving Pimms a-plenty and lemonade.
Staff brought the humour, as always, with some brilliant Victorian beach costumes and knotted hanky hats! Joy, our amazing activities co-ordinator, had helped residents craft many of the decorations for the day. Shell pictures and a display of seaside memorabilia conjured memories of holidays from bygone days.
But perhaps the highlight for residents was the game of wet sponge throwing to “soak the staff”! Thank you to everyone who came along to support us and join in the fun.
Sharing memories with Postcards of Kindness.
We have had an overwhelming response to our Postcards of Kindness initiative on our Facebook page.
Loneliness is well known to be a growing problem, particularly among the elderly. Rather shocking figures from Age UK show that:
- 200,000 older people have not had a conversation with friends or family for a month and
- 60% of people in care homes have no visitors.
Postcards of Kindness encourages members of the community to send our residents postcards from their holidays. We have so far received postcards from the USA, Greece, Malta and a dozen or so from the UK. These have sparked conversations about past holidays and days out and brought back many happy memories for our residents. The Postcards are such a joy for our residents to receive and they are thoroughly enjoying sharing everyone’s holiday adventures.
We reply to as many cards as possible, so if you would like to write to our residents, please do include your address. Postcards do not have to be of a holiday destination; they could simply be a postcard with a picture that could stimulate a memory, e.g. harvest time or a sunset.
