Our garden transformation is well underway. It really has been a project inspired by residents and they have been hands on at every stage. It is lovely now it is coming into fruition, to see residents so proud and happy to show off their project to family and friends.

The garden planning

Residents have loved the opportunity to re-design the garden. We held a number of residents meetings to put together all elements of the project, from plants to paving. We all agreed that we already have a large sunny patio and pergolas, but our huge lawn area needed to be more accessible for everyone.

The plan included a winding path through the garden leading to focal points, so residents can journey around the garden. The pond area would be updated with new planting. Raised beds and sensory planting would make plants and gardening accessing to all residents. Our gorgeous apple tree is staying, central to the plan and will be surrounded by a wild flower meadow. Perfect for all the insects and wildlife, and our free ranging chooks!

Funding the garden project

Residents have helped fundraise over £2,000 for plants and obtain pledges for spring bulbs, plants benches and gardening help. Undaunted by technology, they filmed clips of what the garden project means to them, promoting our Go Fund Me page. Mildred was in the land army and is not afraid to roll up her sleeves. She expressed the importance of fresh air and listening to the birds and bees; being at one with nature. Ian said it would be a wonderful space for both residents and their families visiting. Plus, the benefits of fresh air and stretching our legs. Arthur added “people can get better and better, stay as strong as they can, for as long as they can.”

The BIG dig!

Work started on 22 August by a local company called Active Gardens Limited. Residents enjoyed watching the machinery roll in and their garden plans become reality.

They have been incredibly hands-on: Ian walked the route of the path with the landscaping team and Arthur supervised the digging.

And in a flash the path is in! Check out our video here of our fabulous Lifestyle and Wellbeing lead Rachel walking the route with Ian. https://www.facebook.com/westeatonhome/videos/606800604498596 We have planting and landscaping to go but you can see how this opens the garden up to everyone. A fantastic job!
