There has been a common theme of Great British at Newstead! From the Coronation, to 100th birthday milestones, to the pub, to sewing, to baking and more. Here’s a snapshot of what we have been up too!
The Great British knees up!
We certainly do pomp and pageantry well in the UK. We had a wonderful day celebrating the coronation of King Charles III with our own street style party. Our home was resplendent in red white and blue, with bunting and flags. Residents made floral displays and decorations and a huge thank you to Vanda for coming in to help. We had a lovely afternoon tea provided by our own kitchen, some great games, including Name that Royal and Coronation Bingo! Fabulous music was provided by Lyn and Pete and we also welcomed lots of family and friends of Newstead. A massive thank you to all the staff at Newstead for making this happen.
Our lovely Elsie celebrated her 100th birthday!! Elsie is a prime example of “You don’t stop having fun when you get old, you get old when you stop having fun!” She celebrated with a garden party for her family. She had a card from the King and Queen, a huge number of cards and gifts and a fabulous chocolate cake.
We also celebrated our lovely Joan’s 96th Birthday. Her son came in to celebrate with her and play dominos. Peter also had two celebrations; his 92nd birthday and also winning for the second time our monthly skittles competition.
The Great British Bake Off and Sewing Bee!
We are hosting ‘The Great Newstead Bake Off’. This is open to all, so bake something delicious, maybe your signature dish or something new. Bring it in and our residents and staff will judge it. We have some fantastic prizes for our winners. We cannot wait for the tasting!
Our knitting group have been making bonnets and bonding squares for Hereford SCBU Special Care Baby Unit. We recently dropped off 17 pairs of bonding squares and our residents cross stitched the card too. It has been such a worthwhile, poignant project. Our knitting group love to feel they are giving something back to their community and this has been the perfect follow on from our Innocent Smoothie bobble hat project.
From sewing bees, to actual bees! We took our crafting activity outside and put together and painted some wonderful bee houses. We are selling these in our reception for £3 a bee home. All proceeds are going to the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust.
The pub, the allotment and the icecream van!
The Newstead Arms opened its doors today. Our conservatory was transformed into a pub! Complete with pints of lager and bitter, G and T’s, wine, and lots of traditional bar snacks. We served lots of punters, played some darts, listened to Chas and Dave and had lots of fun!
We have started our own veg and herb garden. Residents planted from seeds butternut squash, beetroot, sage, parsley, broccoli, peas and broad beans! We can’t wait to watch them grow, and then eat them!! With the weather hotting up, we have been outside watering everything. And cooling down ourselves with 99’s all round from the ice-cream van! Thanks to M&M Ices – the sound of the ice cream van jingle brought back so many memories. Our Mollie dog even got her own canine scoop!
