A summer of smiles at The Lawns

It really has been a wonderful summer and we have lots of great photos on our Facebook page. Here are just a few of our summer of smiles!

We enjoyed a wonderful visit from the Walks with Hawks team, who brought their owls, hawks and falcons to The Lawns. Many of our residents held a hawk for the first time and being so close to these magnificent birds, with their stunning plummage, and bright yellow talons and beaks was a fantastic experience. We learnt so much about falconry and the birds of prey conservation programmes. Afterwards, we created together a huge collage of all the photos from the event.

The visit inspired us to see what more we can do at home to help our garden birds. Definitely this summer, it’s been keeping the bird bath topped up and Annette put up a new bird feeder. We have been enjoying the garden – a favourite time to get out is the mornings for a coffee and catch up. Or an afternoon ice cream in the shade to beat the heat! Fingers crossed for an Indian summer and a bumper harvest of veggies from our garden! And we are also having a Gardening Quiz on 11th September.

We are still getting out into Kempsey for our Wednesday morning walks. Give us a wave or stop for a natter if you see us out and about!

We baked for Breast Cancer Awareness Week in August and held a big bake sale on the 22nd at our Residents and Relatives Meeting. A tremendous success, thanks to our residents hard work. All the money raised went to Breast Cancer Awareness.

Residents love to bake each week; the quality control tasting and the immense pleasure in making so many delicious bakes to share together. They have made cherry trifle, lemon meringue pie, cupcakes and apple turnovers, to name a few!

And happy birthday to Graham, who was 83 years young, and celebrated with residents and the team, enjoying a lovely cold pint, after a spot of baking, in his new chef's hat and superman apron!

We also had a wonderful afternoon with Dale from Critterish Allsorts. He brought a skunk, a bearded dragon, a tortoise and a chinchilla and was so informative, answering all of our residents questions. You are never too old to learn something new!

And thinking of learning, we are looking forward to meeting the new cohort of students from Kempsey Primary School and King’s College Sixth Form in their Autumn term.
