There was a real sense of contentment at our home over Christmas and our residents are relaxing into the New Year. We asked for their highlights of 2021 and what they would like to do this year. They have unanimously voted for “more of the same please!”
Everyone agreed that it was the musical events which brought so much joy in 2021. Everyone from The Not Forgotten Charity Singers bringing us wartime classics, to Simon the Piper, to rock and roll and songs from the 60’s and 70’ hit parade with Ray, Eddie and Melissa to Joshua The Tenor at Christmas time.
More of the same: Theme Days, and a few new ideas!
Another favourite was the themed days, particularly those more unique ones requested by residents. The American Diner Day and Octoberfest were special highlights of 2021.
So with our focus on more of the same, we kicked off 2022 with Burns Night. Our home manager Roddy is Scottish so he led the Ode to the Haggis. A tot or two of whisky was enjoyed by all!
For something similar, yet different, we also had a cheese and wine day on 20th January with lots of cheeses to sample (and wines!) We also marked Australia Day by baking Anzac biscuits on the 26th January and celebrated The Chinese New Year.
And, as requested by our residents, a curry night – if you can’t get to the takeaway, we will bring the takeaway experience to you! Our Head Chef Tony cooked up a feast of dishes with all the accompaniments for residents to enjoy.
Day to day favourites
Baking is still a favourite and so deliciously rewarding! Most recently, residents made bread and butter pudding with Kim. A fond reminder of childhood and it went down a treat at lunch time. Kim often brings her dog Molly into our home for cuddles with the residents. It’s lovely to have a four legged friend about the place, as well as our chickens, which residents help look after.
The New Year means a new fitness regime. This time incorporating a lot of bubbles and we even managed a short burst of the song “I’m forever blowing bubbles!”
Gardening is also good exercise and very rewarding. We are delighted to have our collaboration with Herefordshire Growing Point continuing into 2022. We have started by planting crocuses and tulip bulbs.
